The Equipment Trap
Agriculture has always rewarded scale, but modern precision farming takes that to a new extreme. Drones that can monitor soil moisture, spot disease, or apply inputs exactly where needed are powerful tools. They cut waste, save water, catch problems early. But they’ve been locked behind steep price tags and proprietary platforms controlled by John Deere, Trimble, and other giants. Right now, John Deere decides what features you get, how long equipment lasts, whether you can repair it yourself. Farmers have scored real wins on right-to-repair rights, but partial wins aren’t independence. When viable alternatives exist, farmers can vote with their wallet. That’s real leverage.
The Consolidation Context
This is happening in an agriculture that’s increasingly strangled by consolidation. Tyson is cutting beef plant capacity and concentrating output, leaving producers fewer buyers. Equipment makers have merged and blocked competition. Seed and input giants have locked farmers into patent traps. Against that backdrop, affordable independent drones are more than a nice efficiency gain—they’re a small wedge back toward autonomy.

DJI’s dominance in agriculture drones wasn’t inevitable. It was the product of cost, timing, and a market that had no real alternatives. Change those conditions, and the calculus shifts. American manufacturers with better labor practices, supply-chain certainty, and direct support for domestic farming can compete on more than price.
